Story
On Monday, 6 February, at 4:17 am local time, a
7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey (officially known as Türkiye) near the city of Gaziantep, devastating parts of Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria. A series of powerful aftershocks followed it.
Then at 13:24 local time, a second earthquake (M7.5) hit the Elbistan district around 80 miles north of Gaziantep.
Right now, rescuers are racing to save people in Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria who are trapped beneath the rubble and get shelter
and support to those who have lost their homes or are afraid to return inside.
With homes destroyed, power down, and hospitals, bridges and roads damaged, thousands of people urgently need help.
As of 14 February, reports suggest that more than 35,000 have been killed and many thousands more injured. These figures continue to rise.
BWB has a long history of working with RedR UK, and we would like to assist RedR again during this disaster. As an engineering consultancy, we understand the critical need to assess the damage and help repair damaged buildings and critical infrastructure in the disaster zone.
RedR UK was founded in 1980 as the ‘Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief’. It provides engineering training, support and technical expertise to NGOs, aid workers and communities responding to natural and man-made disasters worldwide.
RedR UK is already present in the Middle East, delivering Structural Detailing and Damage Assessments in Syria, and will now
be focusing on supporting structural engineers and construction specialists in the disaster zone.
