We support families in rural Africa to learn more, grow more and sell more.

Story

We are cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, cycling and walking from The Wash to Aberystwyth, kayaking Loch Ness and climbing the
highest peak in Northern Ireland to raise money for Send A Cow. This is part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for BCVA.

Send A Cow is a charity that many of us have supported over the years and we have decided to support them as an association. There is a
further dimension to this support. Some of us were lucky enough to have been taught by Andrew Madel. Andrew lectured at the RVC and inspired generations of farm animal vets. In his later years he suffered from Multiple Sclerosis but his spirit remained undimmed and throughout his illness he remained a staunch supporter of Send A Cow until he passed away in 2013. There is within Send A Cow a virtual herd – the Andrew Madel Herd – and what we are proposing is to put the money raised through BCVA into that herd in memory of Andrew.

Use this page to donate to the BCVA team that will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats between 7th May and 20th May 2017. Some of us are cycling the whole way but we are doing it as a relay
involving people from the various organisations and communities that BCVA work with. We will have vets, farmers, Defra/APHA personnel, pharmaceutical company personnel as well as friends and family joining in at different points along the route, and the UK Chief Vet Nigel Gibbens is taking part in the first four days. We want this to be about the veterinary and agricultural community working together so please join in, sponsor or contact the BCVA Office (office@cattlevet.co.uk) to find out how else you can help with fund raising.

Renowned Devon vet, wildlife photographer and kayaker Rupert Kirkwood will be meeting up with the cycling team on 18th May at Inverness at the completion of his kayak along the 23 miles of Loch Ness from Fort Augustus to Inverness to raise money for the cause. Also donate to support Rupert’s efforts from this page.

As well as the above activity, a group of vets will be cycling across England from East to West and handing over to the CVO for Wales
Christianne Glossop and the Welsh Government/APHA team who will then walk across Wales to Aberystwyth. To sponsor the cycling vets, go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/NFAVS-BCVA-England-EW. To sponsor the Welsh walkers, you can donate from this page.

Past BCVA President and current BVA JVP, John Fishwick, will be cycling 50 miles on an exercise bike to raise money for Send a Cow in
celebration of BCVA’s 50th Anniversary. John’s wife Nienke will be
taking part in the ITU World Triathlon in Leeds on the 11th of June to also raise money for Send a Cow. This will consist of a 1500m swim, 36.2 km cycle and a 10km run. To sponsor them go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/John-Fishwick2

Last but most definitely not least, the five CVOs from the United Kingdom and Southern Ireland will be walking up Slieve Donard – the
highest peak in Northern Ireland – on 18th May. The five CVOs have
never been in the same place at the same time so in a year when the British and Irish Lions are touring to New Zealand it's also a great way to celebrate our unity. To donate to our fantastic Chief Vets and the inflatable cow they are taking with them (!), go to https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ChiefVeterinaryOfficersclimbamountain and follow their efforts on Facebook www.facebook.com/VetsClimbDonard/.

We're going to be taking a British and Irish Lions shirt on some these challenges as a mascot so look out for it!

If you are supporting an individual or specific challenge why not leave them a message with your donation.

We also have non-cyclists raising money in other ways by walking or kayaking or running or simply by holding local fund raising events so there are plenty of ways to join in.

Send a Cow is an International Development charity with a difference. They’ve been working with some of Africa’s poorest families for
nearly 30 years, helping over 1.3 million people work their way out of extreme poverty. They provide livestock, tools, seeds and training as part of a programme giving people the hope and means to establish a future for themselves, their families and their wider communities. They are currently delivering our programmes in seven African countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.
