Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate your attention in these times of increased demands and less resources, both in time and money and in some cases mental capacity, memory and a sense of self.
I'd like to tell you why I am raising money for the Alzheimers Society. My Nana, Vanessa, is slowly disappearing due to Alzheimers and Dementia. When you have experience of this disease, the person you know and love makes an appearance in isolated pockets of personality, twisted up with imagined details, memory holes and anxious mind loops. It's heart breaking to watch someone dip in and out of being the presence you are familiar with, and then just not... In some ways morbidly fascinating to observe how a brain starts to dissolve its ability to make connections and to understand. Reducing the personality to the organic... simply the neuron's ability to transfer information... Scary....
What's more scary is the statistics of this horrible disease. Dementia affects over 830,000 people in the UK. Around 23 million of the
UK population have a close friend or family member with dementia. This figure looks set to rise potentially by 20% by 2020. The unsung hero's of this story are the carers. My Mum looks after my Nan, not full time, Nan lives in wardened accomodation and has a lovely home and a busy social life all managed by Mum, but the responsibility is hers full time and that's a fairly tough burden to bear. Really I should be setting up a page raising money to send my Mum on holiday. but.. in the meantime if you can help me to achieve my goal of raising a minimum of £1000.00 for this cause I would really really appreciate it. I'm going to do this by being a dryathlete from the 5th of January until the 28th of February....That's 55 days in totaI...HOWEVER I am going to add in a clause. I get 3 cheat days. If I choose to cash in a cheat I will have to donate £50 per cheat day. If anyone wants to make a substantial donation to cancel my cheat days it will cost you £100 per day..

I thank you again and I wish you health and happiness for this 2015. Please donate whatever you can manage. No donation is too small *or too big! ;)....Athene xxx
