Story

I'm running the London Marathon in support of Saint Francis Hospice (SFH). They are a hospice based in Havering-atte-Bower who support anyone living with illnesses that can't be cured or treated in Havering, Brentwood, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and West Essex. The Government only fund 28% of the services and the other 8 million a year needed relies on donations and fundraising events.

Saint Francis Hospice is an independent charity, there is no cost if you need our services, nor to the people who care for you and about you. Kind and generous gifts from local people, companies and schools help make sure that everyone who is under the care of Saint Francis Hospice has round-the-clock support. Experienced consultants, doctors, nurses and other health and social care professionals, are on hand to care for you whether you choose to be at home, in the hospice itself, in hospital or in a care home.

Working on the inpatient unit with the patients and their loved ones, I know and see how much of a difference the hospice can make to people’s lives. When I first qualified as a nurse, I knew I wanted to work at the hospice and was so lucky to get a position on the Inpatient unit. Over the years, I have worked as a staff nurse on the ward, a community nurse and now manage the inpatient unit at the hospice. I feel very privileged to be part of such a wonderful team and want to raise money to ensure we can continue to give the care our patients and families deserve.

Life brings us challenges and covid had a devastating effect for some families. Living with a bereavement is something you can’t prepare for. The hospice was able to secure funding to be able to offer further support not only experiencing loss through the hospice but to anyone who experienced loss through covid. Supporting families after loss is just as important to us as supporting whilst their loved one is under our care.

I have decided to run the London Marathon to raise funds for the hospice but also to keep motivated with our well-being.

Any donations will be really appreciated but most of all I hope to see you on the day cheering me on!
