Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race 2013 · 30 March 2013

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Myself and Sam are competing in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon at Easter 2013. The DW involves paddling 125 miles, from Devizes in Wiltshire to Westminster Bridge in London, in under 30 hours straight. We're aiming to finish it in 22 hours, a time that we hope will secure us the University Challenge trophy for the fastest university crew.

We have been training hard since September clocking up over 70 miles in the boat. The University's High Performance Programme is supporting us with tailored strength and conditioning programmes and nutrition plans.

"The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon is one of the most demanding open-to-all endurance events on the planet..."

I have chosen to raise money for Alzheimer's Society in memory of my Nan and Nana; who both suffered from dementia before they passed away in the last 2 years. Alzheimer's Society do fantastic work to support those with dementia and their families, and fund further research into treatment and pursuing a cure. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, affecting around 496,000 people in the UK. £12.50 will enable one caller to the Alzheimer's Society Dementia Helpline to recieve the advice and support they need.

Please spare the price of a pint or however much you can for this fantastic charity. Your donation will mean a lot and will really help to spur Sam and I along to the finish line.

Thanks for reading this,

Ashley
