Story
Leading the fight against dementia.
This year I wanted to set myself a challenge; one which would push myself to the limit and also help raise money for an exceptional cause. The Alzheimer’s Society is a very worthy charity and I am committed to helping raise a substantial amount of money to help those who suffer from this incurable disease.
One in three people over the age of 65 in the will end their life with dementia and there are over 700,000 people in the with such a condition today. I am hoping that by raising this money I will make a real impact on those sufferer’s lives and improve their well being. The money raised will not only go towards the Alzheimer's research, but also providing day-care facilities for sufferers and respite for carers.
This trek will (hopefully) see me climb , which is the highest free-standing mountain in the world at nearly 20,000 feet. The climb will push me both mentally and physically harder that I have ever been pushed before. During this 7 day trek I will be faced with temperatures plummeting to -20C coupled with the effects of altitude sickness. Though many of you often comment how my air is thinner at my 6 foot 6 stature, this will be somewhat different!
I am looking for your donation in helping me reach the summit. I have a fundraising target of £3,500 of which a small portion will be used to cover costs, (I have paid £400 separately for my personal costs of this trip) whilst the vast majority of the money will go directly to the society helping people live with dementia today and for the researchers to help find a cure tomorrow.
Where does your donated money go?
- £1,250 pays to run Talking Point for one month. Talking Point is the Alzheimer's society's 24/7 online community for people with dementia, their carers, family and friends.
- £2,000 could support over 10,000 families with vital advice on how to talk to children about dementia. - £5,000 could support a researcher for 1 year with the chemicals and equipment they need to further understand the causes of dementia, so that better treatments can be developed and a search for the cure can continue. For more information about the trek please follow: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=904 Whilst the direct link to the charity can be found here: www.alzheimers.org.uk
