Story
As some of you may know, I've been volunteering in the Philippines just over 2 months now. I have helped build transitional shelters, clear and safely bring down destroyed buildings, dug all day in the heat and all other kinds of hammering, shovelling and general dirty work.
11 months after the Typhoon, the devastation is still very much visible. Though great progress has been made, there is still so much work to be done. Over 25,000 people are still displaced, living in tents, unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
Before the one year anniversary of Haiyan on November 8th, we aim to raise 1.1 million Philippine Pesos (€17,560) towards reconstruction projects. This symbolic amount - one Peso for every home that was affected - will go build 9 Progressive Core Homes in the local Barangays and will provide families which much needed security and shelter.
To help with this campaign I'm organising and taking part in a sponsored 300km cycle which follows the path of the typhoon from Guiuan where it made landfall to Ormoc. The craziness starts on the 10th of November and will take 7 days to complete.
Myself and 5 other sweaty, exhausted, malnourished, chronically dehydrated and mildly deranged volunteers, cycling in the heat of the day and/or monsoon rain, across dusty tracks, up mountain paths with only each other in the middle of typhoon season. What could possibly go wrong!?
