Story
Contrary to general assumption, my association with cycling really revolves around travelling short distances reasonably quickly, often with a bit of swimming and running thrown in before and after... Spending all day on a bike is really not my cup of tea...
Such protestations were no match for Hertford's Development Office however, and so alongside 12 other students (and a whole host of alumni, friends, and staff), I will be riding this year's Tour De Hertford - covering 335km (or perhaps even 439km) in three days as we journey from coast to coast.
This journey both celebrates and supports the legacy of Neil Tanner, whose pioneering approach to Outreach catalysed an otherwise latent shift amongst Oxford's Colleges towards a more progressive admissions system. Within Hertford, the impact and influence of his work remains clearly apparent in the culture of our undergraduate community, which takes pride in its openness, tolerance, and diversity. As Hertford JCR's current Access & Outreach Officer, I am delighted to be able to support his legacy in my own small way.
The journey from Morecambe to Robin Hood Bay has been selected so as to visit a large number of places from which 'Tanner Students' were drawn. All proceeds raised will go towards the funding of Hertford's Bursary/Student Support system.
