Story

Apryl Hammett will be running her 100th Ultra Marathon for Macmillan.

In May 2022 my husband Guy heard the devastating news that he had cancer in his throat. It is never easy to hear the words ‘You have Cancer’. He was supported by the team at Southend University Hospital, which also has a Macmillan Centre downstairs.

Guy was told that he was to have 30 sessions of Radiotherapy
and 6 sessions of Chemotherapy. Due to the fact that he would be unable to eat after a certain point he was fitted with a feed tube. This allowed him to have nutritional shakes and fluids.

He had a mask made for him which made sure he stayed
still whilst he had his Radiotherapy.

This all came as a huge shock for Guy and his family and
friends. The following few months were extremely tough for him and for those were who around him who could only support him with love.

He lost his ability to eat and to talk properly as the Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy took their toll.

During this time, Southend University Hospital and the
Macmillan nurses in the centre were absolutely fantastic. The Macmillan team gave Guy and his family clear and concise literature and support, that was clear to understand. They enabled Guy to live his life as best as he could whilst living with cancer. Every query and question were answered with kindness and knowledge.

The Hammett family want to say thank you to Macmillan.
Their support enabled Guy to be able to keep doing the activities that he wanted to do during the months of his treatment and afterwards.

On December 5th 2022, Guy went to see Southend
University Hospital to hear the good news that the cancers in his throat had gone. Whilst we cannot say that he is ‘Cancer Free’ (We have to wait for five years to hear those magic words) we can celebrate his recovery and say thanks to the Macmillan Charity.

Most people think that a marathon is long enough, but Apryl wants the fundraising marathon to be special and so that is why she has chosen her 100th Ultra Marathon to be in her home County of Essex. She will be running with the Hare and Tortoise team at the Flitch Way in Braintree to complete her Ultra Marathon. This is an official event with the local based Running Events Company
