FUN RUN 2013 · 26 May 2013
We are rasing money to purchase 73 sets of tefillin for the 73 male students in their high school program. These boys include Tikva’s orphans as well as those from severely impoverished families within Odessa’s broader Jewish community. All of them are from disadvantaged backgrounds and lack the resources to purchase their own tefillin. Your support will enable Tikva to purchase tefillin so that each boy can participate in daily prayers, having a tangible object, re-enforcing G-d’s mitzvot and the unique bond that exists between G-d and the Jewish people.
More about Tikva...Since 1996, Tikva has worked to rescue and care for Jewish children in need from around Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. Found in state orphanages, the street, or abusive, neglectful family situations, these children find new hope at Tikva's three homes in Odessa. The 350 children in Tikva’s care are welcomed into a safe, stimulating environment. They receive nutritious food, warm clothing, complete medical treatment, and the care of a loving, compassionate staff.
In addition, Tikva provides a first-rate education Jewish and secular education for up to 1,000 young people. Students include over 350 children from Tikva's homes, 550 underprivileged girls and boys from the broader Jewish community and 195 students enrolled in Tikva’s accredited university program. The schools operate from the pre-school level through university.
A vital part of Tikva’s mission is nurturing Jewish identity and religious practice among the children in its homes and schools. Along with a high-quality secular curriculum, Tikva’s schools offer in-depth Jewish religious instruction, which includes Hebrew, Jewish history, Israeli culture and tradition, Jewish holidays and Torah studies. This focus provides students with timeless values and firm roots in the tradition that is their birthright, but one that many are unfamiliar with due to years of communist rule and religious oppression in the former Soviet Union.
