Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In September 2009 my son, Arthur, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. At the time, I had no idea what was wrong with him. Within the space of a weekend he lost an incredible amount of weight, became very lethargic, his breathing became very shallow and he had a constant thirst. I took him to the Doctor who confirmed he had type 1 diabetes and he was rushed into hospital with keytoacidosis, a life threatening condition where the lack of insulin causes high blood sugar levels, the presence of ketones in the urine and blood and certain acids (known as ketoacids) in the blood.
Basically, Arthur's pancreas had stopped working and he was no longer producing insulin. Had he not been treated that day I could have lost him. The staff at Poole Hospital were incredible not only with the week he was in hospital but the continued support we have received since.
Living with Type 1 Diabetes is a constant challenge. Arthur must carefully balance insulin doses by injections multiple times a day with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. He has to test his blood sugar by pricking his fingers for blood six or more times a day. Despite this constant attention, he still runs the risk of dangerous high or low blood sugar levels, both of which can be life threatening.
People with Type 1 Diabetes have to overcome these challenges every day of their lives!!
Although type 1 diabetes is a serious and difficult disease, treatment options are improving all the time, and people with T1D can lead full and active lives. JDRF is driving research to improve the technology people with T1D use to monitor blood sugar levels and deliver the proper doses of insulin, as well as research that will ultimately deliver a cure.
For those of you that know me, you will know that Abeseiling off Spinnaker Tower is a massive challenge for me as I am petrified of heights, any type of fairground ride, flying. etc. However, it is nothing compared to the challenge my Arthur and every child and adult with Type 1 Diabetes has to face every day.
