At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.  Alzheimers and Dementia

In my mother’s unit there were 10 elderly people with dementia and Alzheimer’s of which 8 could easily have live in home with their friends, family, pets, interests and all the things that make life worth living, around them.    The disease robbed them of their character and their pride BUT something can be done.   The Alzheimer’s Society is funding research into the disease when you have got it, how you can keep it at bay and how you can ensure you don’t get it in the first place!    They believe it is not an inevitable part of getting older nor do they think a significant percentage of younger people should get it either.

I got almost no information from the doctors about the disease but I learnt how to help, the stages of it and what to expect from the Society’s monthly magazine.   The information it contains is an absolute life line to those caring for someone.

To see my elegant and lively mother turn into someone I could not recognize was heart breaking and not something I would wish on anyone.   If by cycling from Gretna Green (note I am there for cyling not marrying purposes!) to Berwick on Tweed I can raise awareness of the Society and £500 that would be brilliant!

I have been training for it at weekends and plan to take my trusty Claud Butler on which I cycle to work every day.   If there is little wind it should not be too bad but knowing the borders there will be wind, rain, hills, you name it!   I will be a shadow of my former self by the time I reach my friends house in Berwick for a very large gin and tonic!
