Story
On the 10th of April I will be running the Brighton Marathon for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
The Brighton Marathon is 26 miles long and I am aiming to complete it in 4 and a half hours. To achieve this I have been training 5 times a week, I ran the Brighton half marathon on the 20th of February in a time of 2 hours and 16 minutes and I am running the Reading half marathon on the 20th of March hoping to improve on this time.
I am running for Breakthrough because I believe passionately in their research to eradicate cancer. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK and 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. Around 1,000 women die of breast cancer every month in the UK and around 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. Breakthrough is a pioneering charity saving lives and changing futures, through research, campaigning and education - removing the fear of breast cancer for good.
With the money I hope to raise:
£6 - Could pay for one person’s blood to be processed as part of the Breakthrough Generations Study – the world’s largest, most comprehensive study into the causes of breast cancer. Breakthrough are following 100,000 women in the UK for 40 years to help find crucial information about the causes of breast cancer.
£25 - Could pay for an hour of a senior scientist’s time. Their work could help develop more accurate ways of classifying breast cancers to improve their diagnosis and treatment.
£65 - Could pay for enough specialist chemicals to enable a scientist to carry out their experiments for one day.
£200 - Could buy antibodies used by many of Breakthrough's scientists. These determine whether certain proteins are involved in the development and progression of breast cancer, helping to identify potential drug targets.
£500 - Could pay for a transilluminator, an essential piece of equipment for scientists to study DNA during experiments.
