Our names are Ania Nurrish-Walker and Izzy Harper and as the final part of our University course before graduating as vets we are travelling to Animal Care in Egypt (ACE) in May 2023 to volunteer at their clinic in Luxor, Egypt. Prior to our trip we are raising money for ACE which is a charity dedicated to the community and its’ working animals. 

Both of us have been lucky enough to grow up around horses, appreciating the massive impact they have on our lives and the lives of others in the UK. This impact is one that is seen all around the world but unfortunately all horses and donkeys are not kept to the same exceptional standard as they are here in the UK. In Luxor due to owners’ lack of money, resources and knowledge, working horses and donkeys really suffer. They live tied up on the streets, working in extreme temperatures often with ill-fitting tack, severe wounds, infectious diseases and limited food and water. It is unfortunately a vicious cycle with owners relying on their animal to provide an income so if the animal falls ill and cannot work the owner cannot earn a living. In order to address this mistreatment, the centre provides lessons in basic animal husbandry for around 150 children a week during term time as well as education for the owners. Veterinary facilities also allow for treatment of the animals and overnight care for those animals in need. As the only centre in Egypt to provide free surgical procedures, ACE is an invaluable resource to the community.
