......................................................

A couple of months ago over a few beers some of my closest friends (Guy, Mark, Dan, Ryan, Jon, Chris) and I thought it would be good idea to get together and take part in a Tough Mudder event this September.

For those who don’t know, the Tough Mudder event is a hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle course designed by the Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. To paint a better picture, a group of barely fit lads will be electrocuted, have to scale a series of 12ft walls, walk on fire and dive through ice baths whilst attempting to run a half marathon (you can find more about it here http://toughmudder.co.uk/).

Sounds like fun I hear you say, well, there is also a more worthwhile reason we will be doing this and that’s to attempt to raise a little money for the Brain Tumour Research charity.

4 years ago one of our other friends Sam (Dan’s younger brother) was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was rugby training when he suffered concussion after a knock to the head. After 2 days he had a seizure and was admitted to hospital where, after an MRI scan, they found a brain tumour. After successful brain surgery to remove the tumour Sam had a setback where 2 years later they discovered another tumour in a similar place to the first. After a second operation and a course of radiotherapy Sam is back on the road to recovery but is trying to come to terms with that fact this is a condition that may affect him for the rest of his life.

Sam has been lucky but there are also numerous other people plighted by tumours that are less so. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of adults under 40 and the second biggest of children (after leukaemia) with over 8,000 people diagnosed with a primary brain tumour each year.

Brain Tumour Research was set up in 2004 to achieve a common goal in raising funds for research into the prevention and treatment of brain tumours, as well as ultimately finding a cure. We will be attempting to raise £2740 which is enough to sponsor a day of research at the dedicated research centre in the University of Portsmouth

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
