Story
In memory of Andrew Cormack 16th April 1963 to 12th April 2023
Andrew loved the mountains. They were a massive part of his life.
Growing up in St Andrews, he spent many weekends with Richard, Edith and Anne in the Deeside area of the Cairngorms. Following University in Cambridge, he moved to Dorset, Barry and then, to “life choice”, Abergavenny, drawn by the beauty of the surrounding hills.
With the Brecon Beacons on his doorstep, he and wife Janet took every opportunity to spend time out of doors, caring for nature, educating others, and reporting on wildlife. Most weekends they would walk the hills, completing bird counts or simply climbing the mountains they loved.
Despite recurring cancer from 2017, Andrew maintained his active lifestyle, attaching walking activities to every opportunity, here and abroad. As recently as January 2023, he was at the summit of Artxanda in Bilbao, assisted by a cable car, but still on top of the world.
As Chief Regulatory Officer for JISC, he shared his passion with international colleagues on several occasions. In tributes to Andrew, these life enhancing experiences were as notable as those praising his IT legal and regulatory skills.
So that others may share Andrew’s passion for the hills, his family request that donations to Braemar Mountain Rescue be made rather than sending flowers. Mountain rescue charities operate solely on donations, supporting the mountains Andrew loved.
With many thanks for your thoughts, kind wishes, and donations.
Janet, Edith, Richard, and Anne
Andrew’s funeral will be held during May in Abergavenny. Details to follow.
