Story
I've worked and played with many of you over the years and, as you all know, I have a fine head of hair (as well as fantastic good looks, a lean and buff body and a superb mind).
What lots of people don't know is that I work, on and off satge, with a local arts centre on the Isle of Dogs (where I both live and work).
One of the things that is most inspirational about 'The Space' is that it is not a bunch of 'old luvies' air kissing and hugging each other but a place that takes an active part in, and makes a massive difference to, the local community.
I've worked on the Isle of Dogs (aka Canary Wharf) for many years and for some of the richest companies in the world along with lots of great people who I know are not short of a bob or two. But two miles further south from Canary Wharf is a very mixed community that has pockets of poverty and wealth living right next to each other.
The work that The Space does in bringing different parts of the community together is inspirational and tranforming - from the drama groups for kids and teenagers that run after school in the week, all the way to adult groups that teach acting, produce plays and develop new scripts. And on top of all that they produce some of the best professional fringe theater in the country!
At the moment they are struggling, among other things, with a leaky roof that needs some urgent attention - with the cutting of most public sector funding to the arts over the past few years they now need real help from those who live and work locally.
To encourage as many donations as possible I'm going to remove my own 'roof' on Friday 13th September (lucky for some) and will make this an open event where you can shout your encouragement to me from the sidelines. Even if you can't make please give generously.
