Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Alzheimer's is a terrible disease which afflicts more than 820,000 people in the UK. My father suffered from Alzheimer's and we watched while he died piece by piece. It is really hard for the person who has Alzheimer's and as hard for their family. By the time he died, my father no longer recognised any of his family, and had even lost the power of speech.
Alzheimer's is currently incurable, but research to find a cure, or even slow its progress is poorly funded. The Alzheimer's Research Trust (ART) is a charity that helps fill the gap, and currently funds 120 projects in the UK. Please visit their site at http://www.alzheimers-research.org.uk/ to get an idea of the work they are supporting.
I will starting a sponsored long distance walk on 1 June to raise money for ART. I will be walking the length of the Outer Hebrides with my daughter Katie. The total distance is over 200 miles, which is twice as far as I have done before, and it is over 15 years since I did any backpacking at all. The walk starts at the north of the Isle of Lewis, then Harris. We will catch a ferry to North Uist, and then over causeways to cross Benbecula and South Uist. A final ferry takes to the final island - Barra. I expect the journey to take about 15 days, weather depending.
