Story
Andrew Gray
On the 1st of March 2011, at Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin, Elaine and David Gray from Keith became proud parents to their first child together, naming their boy Andrew.
Following some initial concerns regarding Andrew's health, he was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital shortly after birth. Further examination revealed he had transposition of the great arteries, a life-threatening condition where the aorta and pulmonary artery are the wrong way round.
Andrew was subsequently flown to The Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill, Glasgow where he received further life-saving treatment until corrective surgery could be performed. The surgery to “switch” the arteries was successfully performed on the 10th of March, and Andrew is recovering well.
We are eternally grateful to the Neonatal Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and the NICU, Surgical Team, PICU and Cardiac Ward 5a at Yorkhill, without whom Andrew would not be with us today. We also thank the staff of the Scottish Neonatal Transport Service and Scottish Ambulance Service Air Ambulance, for getting Andrew safely to Aberdeen and onto Glasgow.
Yorkhill Children's Foundation
Yorkhill Children’s Foundation funds medical equipment and projects invaluable to the treatment, care, physical and mental well being of sick children and babies at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill in Glasgow and at other related facilities throughout NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Ronald McDonald House, Glasgow
Elaine and David needed to be near Andrew whilst he was in hospital in Yorkhill, and were offered accommodation at the nearby Ronald McDonald House.
The Ronald McDonald House at Yorkhill, the only one of it’s kind in Scotland, opened in 1996 and provides free accommodation for the families of long term and critically ill patients at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Yorkhill Family House Ltd, a registered charity, manages the day-to-day running of the House and meets the ongoing costs of around £300,000 per year.
