Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm raising money for ASSIST, which is currently the only Sheffield charity focused on destitution among asylum seekers. ASSIST helps asylum seekers whose initial claims have been rejected, and who are therefore destitute. But ASSIST doesn't have the resources to support everyone who needs help, so anything you can give will be gratefully received.

In ASSIST’s experience, many refused asylum seekers in the UK are in fact genuine refugees who have been let down by the system. This can be due to inadequate legal aid and a culture of disbelief. In Britain's judicial system, we are innocent until proven guilty, but for asylum seekers the opposite is true.

Asylum seekers are not allowed to work. Whilst a claim is ongoing, they receive accommodation and cash support. But if they are rejected, they have no right to accommodation or asylum support from 21 days after losing their appeal - unless there is a temporary barrier preventing them from leaving the country. If they don't qualify for that support, they are left with no right to work, no benefits and no accommodation.

I'm running the Sheffield Half Marathon in April and am hoping to raise £1000 for ASSIST. The first 5 miles are uphill and will be really tough, but your support will help to propel me up to the top!
