Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I feel a bit sick. I've never run this far and despite running for 2 years now, this is going to be really difficult.

I wanted to try a half marathon, as it is in theory the next step up to what I've been running so far and yet, since starting training it appears I'm actually getting worse at running! Maybe its the thought of what's in store. I am definately going to complete this however and I will be running for a cause which is not as publicised as most and is the only charity in the UK raising money for this cause.

Dementia is progressive. It is a disease of the brain. Someone suffering from dementia (which includes Alzheimer's Disease or following a stroke) may not be able to find their way back from the shops, even if they've lived in the same house all their lives. They may experience severe mood changes as the disease progresses to their emotion centre in the brain. Despite being the most basic skills you learn, people with dementia may lose the ability to talk, read and write. Eventually, they are completely dependant on others and may become immobile. These symptoms can last for 10 years or more.

One in three people over 65 will die with dementia.

Dementia can also affect younger people. There are currently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with over 16,000 younger people being in those stats. This is not only a disease for older people.

60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia and delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would reduce deaths directly attributable to dementia by 30,000 a year. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing - it is caused by diseases of the brain that rob people's lives.

£12.50 enables one caller to the ALzheimer's Society Dementia Helpline to receive the advice they need

£50 could pay a PhD researcher for a day to continue vital research

£100 could pay for a brain scan in a clinical trial to help improve the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease.

Please donate as much as you would spend on a night out (£20), a few pints (£9!), a takeaway pizza (£14!) or take your lunch to work one day when you normally wouldn't and what you save, you could donate (£6).

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.

Thank you,

Amy
