Adidas Women's 5k Challenge · 11 September 2011 ·

We target what’s important to stop ovarian cancer devastating lives.

Story

On Sun 11th September I will be running the Adidas 5k Women's Challenge in Hyde Park for Target Ovarian Cancer.

As I work for them, I can vouch for the fantastic work that the charity does. There is low awareness, poor survival as a result of late diagnosis and a lack of funding for this disease in the UK. Shockingly the UK survival rates are among the worst in Europe.

Target Ovarian Cancer works in several areas - supporting women living with the disease, educating women and training GPs to spot the signs earlier, campaigning at Government level for improvements in diagnosis, treatment and care and researching into new treatments to save lives.

We want to see the same advances and improvements seen in breast cancer in recent years (survival is now 82%, compared with 36% for ovarian cancer). This can only be achieved with your support - so please sponsor me!

Thank you
Amyx

Women - please continue reading to make yourself aware of the symptoms:

The list of symptoms will look familiar to most women. What you need to know about ovarian cancer is that the symptoms are:

  • Frequent – they happen more than 12 times a month
  • Persistent – they don’t go away
  • New – they are not normal for you and may have started in the last year

Research has shown that the key symptoms to be aware of are:

  • Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Increased abdominal size/persistent bloating – not bloating that comes and goes
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
  • Urinary symptoms (needing to wee more urgently or often than usual)

Occasionally there can be other symptoms such as

  • Changes in bowel habit
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you regularly experience any of these symptoms, which are not normal for you, it is important that you see your GP. It is unlikely that your symptoms are caused by a serious problem, but it is important to be checked out.
