Who am I?

Hi, everyone!

My name is Amy Allsop. I was born and raised in Venezuela, but I have been living in the UK since 2015. Even though I'm 7000km away from home, I still hold my country close to my heart and want to do as much as I can to help those in need. Therefore, I have decided to say goodbye to my hair in order to raise awareness about the situation in Venezuela and to fundraise for the charity Healing Venezuela. "Are you really shaving your head?" you may ask. Yes, I am going to be bold (pun intended) for charity. Shaving my head is the least I can do for my country, and I need your help and support to achieve my £1250 goal! Every penny we raise will be used to send medicines and medical supplies to Venezuela and help those in need.

"...but what is going on in Venezuela, Amy?"

I'm glad you asked! Many of you may hear the name 'Venezuela' and imagine sandy beaches, beautiful mountains, the famous Angel Falls and gorgeous women. However, some of you may not know about the ongoing crisis in the country. So, allow me to explain: this crisis has had a heavy toll on many sectors, especially on the health sector. According to a report by the former Venezuelan Health Minister, cases of infant mortality rose 30% and maternal mortality 65%, while malaria shot up 76% last year. There was also a jump in illnesses such as diphtheria and Zika. Furthermore, the country is suffering widespread shortages of medicines and basic medical equipment. In fact, 85% of medicines are unavailable. Even something as basic as paracetamol is scarce! It may sound shocking, but this is a reality many Venezuelans have to endure every single day!

What is Healing Venezuela?

Healing Venezuela is a UK registered charity that sends medical supplies to Venezuela every two weeks. They send fortnightly consignments to the main children's hospital in Caracas, and from there, medicines and medical supplies are sent to rural areas around the country. Since February 2017, Healing Venezuela has sent more than 200kg of medical supplies to Venezuela.

Me llamo Amy Allsop. Nací y crecí en Venezuela, pero he estado viviendo en el Reino Unido desde el año 2015. A pesar de estar a 7000km de distancia de mi madre patria, aún mantengo a Venezuela en mi corazón y en mi mente. Por ello, decidí decirle adiós a mi cabello para crear conciencia sobre la situación en Venezuela y para recaudar fondos para la organización benéfica Healing Venezuela. "¿En verdad te afeitarás la cabeza?" se preguntarán. Sí, pelonita por una buena causa y necesito de su ayuda para llegar a mi objetivo de £1250. Cada centavo será utilizado para enviar medicamentos a Venezuela y ayudar a aquellos que más necesitan de nosotros :)

"pero... ¿qué está pasando en Venezuela?"

¡Gracias por preguntar! Al escuchar la palabra "Venezuela", lo primero que les vendría a la mente son imágenes de hermosas playas, altas montañas, el Salto Ángel y mujeres bellas. Sin embargo, muchos de ustedes no imaginarían una grave crisis. Para aquellos que no están al tanto, permítanme explicarles: la crisis actual en Venezuela ha tenido un impacto enorme en muchos sectores, en especial en el sector de la salud. Según la ex-ministro de la salud, la mortalidad infantil aumentó un 30%, la mortalidad materna en un 65% y los casos de malaria en un 76%. También aumentaron los casos de Zika y difteria. Es más, hay una gran escasez de medicamentos y equipos médicos. De hecho, 85% de los medicamentos están escaseando, incluyendo algo tan básico como el paracetamol. Puede parecer impactante, pero es la realidad para miles de venezolanos. 

¿Qué es Healing Venezuela?

Healing Venezuela es una organización benéfica registrada en el Reino Unido. Esta organización se encarga de enviar medicinas e insumos médicos a Venezuela cada dos semanas. Los envíos llegan al hospital J.M de los Rios en Caracas y de allí se reparten a áreas rurales. Desde febrero de 2017, Healing Venezuela ha enviado más de 200kg de insumos médicos a Venezuela.
