Story

Team Gordon Bennett (Team GB 🇬🇧 - Simone, Mark, Rees, Annabel, Sylv, Liz, Pete, Jodie, Mogan, Ted and Amelia... plus not forgetting our driver Bron) are attempting The National Three Peaks Challenge in loving memory of Peter Jones, our very much loved Grandad, Husband, Dad and Friend.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft).

We will be climbing the three peaks on 12th August 2021.

Why are we doing this crazy challenge??!!

In February 2021 we lost our gorgeous Grandad to Myelodysplastic syndrome with ringed sideroblasts (MDS-RS). Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and causes a drop in the normal number of blood cells. In MDS-RS specifically, there are low numbers of red blood cells (anaemia). Grandad received treatment, mainly via blood transfusions, which kept him going for many years, until sadly the treatment stopped working and there was nothing more that could be done to treat his illness.

Grandad spent his last days in St Michael's Hospice, St Leonard's-on-Sea. The hospice provided a level of care and security that we as a family could not have given Grandad at home. Until you need end of life care, you don't really appreciate what it involves to keep someone safe, comfortable, and out of pain. "Having an advanced illness can raise all sorts of practical, physical and emotional issues which not only affect the patient, but their friends and family too", as we found out.

St Michael's Hospice "provide high quality, responsive palliative care and bereavement support across Hastings and Rother, and work collaboratively with others to improve end of life care for all"

"The cost of running the Hospice and providing the full range of services to its patients is over £6million a year. About one third of this is funded by the NHS, but the other two thirds (circa £5.3million, over £14,400 per day) are raised from voluntary services", donations and crazy challenges, such as the one we are going to embark on.

Team Gordon Bennett (Team GB) are attempting The Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds as a thank you to St Michael's Hospice, for all they did for our Grandad in his final days.

We are grateful for any donations and thank you all for your support.
