A bit about us
We are a group of lycra clad football supporting middle aged men from Sheffield. We have decided to take on our biggest challenge yet, 200 miles over 2 days!
Day 1 - we're riding from Mundella primary School (Sheffield) and are visiting every professional Club in South Yorkshire as well as Maltby Main FC, Hallam FC before crossing over the Derbyshire border to visit the oldest club in the world Sheffield FC and Chesterfield FC.
Day 2 - A 100 mile circuit of Sheffield taking in hills and lots of them. Jawbone, Mam Nic, Beeley to name a few - day 2 is gonna hurt!!
The charity we have chosen to support is CLIC Sargent because they continue to support an inspirational girl from the school called Amber. Amber is living with a brain tumour and has faced years of surgery and chemotherapy.
This is the important bit - Amber’s Story - Amber is 10 years old - a happy, funny and loving young lady. However her life so far has been a painful and difficult battle. When Amber was 8 months old, an MRI showed a golf ball sized tumour was in the middle of her brain. Connected to vital structures the doctors couldn't fully remove it. She underwent a 9 hour operation to investigate it and soon after began 18 months of successful chemotherapy.
At 4 years old her tumour was growing again and the next 3 years were a roller-coaster of 5 different chemotherapy protocols to try and halt it’s progression. So many medicines didn't work for her and the tumour continued to grow.
January 2017 brought the need for more surgery and she went through another 9 hour operation to reduce the size of the tumour. Once healed Amber and her family headed to Oklahoma for proton beam radiation to try and kill the tumour. Once home from the States she became very ill and was rushed in for emergency brain surgery as her brain had swelled dangerously inside her skull and had even herniated.
Until last week (February 2020) the tumour has been fairly well behaved, with the focus on controlling the issues chemotherapy and radiation have caused. Unfortunately this is no longer the case and a recent MRI scan has shown there is a need for more surgery and treatment.
Amber is registered blind, she has hormone deficiencies, she has cognitive damage and her teeth haven't developed correctly.
Throughout all this, a constant positive influence has been the support of CLIC Sargent. Their team of social workers have provided endless healing hugs when Amber’s family have needed an outlet for the pain and confusion. Reassuring hands to hold when Amber has been scared with new medicines and treatments. They have offered invaluable advice on benefits to ease the financial burden. The team have helped gain access to grants and holidays to allow the family to rest or buy things for the house.
Lara, Amber’s Mum
“It's not an understatement to say we wouldn't have got through the last 9 years in the same way if they hadn’t been there for us. I can’t imagine them not being there for other families in this situation. In a world where there is so much unknown, when everything else can change so quickly, I always know CLIC Sargent are there for us.”
.
Today, 12 more children and young adults in the UK will receive the devastating news they have cancer. CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading charity for young cancer patients and their families.
Could you want to join us in making a difference?
Thank you in advance for whatever contribution you can make.
Thanks Amber’s MAMILS x
