Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
When Nana got Alzheimer's I don't think many people knew what it was (in late 1980's) & it certainly wasn't something my family were prepared for. It's hard to watch the person you love slip away & change before your eyes. My Grandad was amazing (of course!) & cared for Nana every day of her life - at home when she forgot little things...big things...who he was...who she was... & even when she was in hospital surviving physically but without any quality of life she was always loved & she is never forgotten.
I know how it affected our family & I still see how families are affected by Alzheimer's on a daily basis through my work at Home Instead Senior Care. We deliver fantastic care to the elderly in their own home to ensure they remain independent for as long as possible & can enjoy a good quality of life. We do it properly! No 15minute calls! The same carer providing a consistent service to the same elderly person week in & week out for a minimum of 1hour. The carers form bonds...relationships & become friends.
I recruit those carers & so every day I speak to people who share their very personal stories with me because they WANT to make a difference. "What happened when Mum couldn't remember who I was..." "What happened when Dad went into the care home..." "What happened when Grandad put all his socks in the freezer!'"
I laugh with the carers & I often cry with them too. We get emotional because we care about the elderly & we want everyone to have choices... the the best care possible... even at the end of life - just as we want for our loved ones.
I hope you won't think of 'the elderly' as a huge group of grey haired folk. Think of them as your Nana, Grandad, a dancer, a sailor, a writer, an actor, a policeman, a nurse, a teacher. They all have amazing stories to tell - & most of them have done more exciting things than you or I will ever do! Ask them!!!
Alzheimer's takes away that part of them...but we can slow down this dreaded disease. Please help me raise some money to give our loved ones a better quality of life for longer.
Thank you - Axxx
