Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Some of you may know that I lost my mum in September last year to Leukaemia so I wanted to do something to raise awareness of this horrible disease and also do something in memory of my mum, Judy Le Bas.

This disease took her very quickly in the end and I can remember like it was yesterday being in the consultation room in Leeds hospital whilst the doctor was confirming there was nothing else that can be done. My mum at the time bless her did not ask on timescales as I knew she wanted to fight it still no matter what. But it crushed me watching her break down that day knowing that she was fighting a losing battle against an opponent that showed no merci at all.

I stayed behind to ask what the timescales were and was told around 8 weeks which I couldn't believe at the time as she was mobile, eating okay and in reasonable spirits and this continued for a good 2-3 weeks from there. The photo I have used as the cover photo was taken on the evening that England played Poland in summer 2021 and I remember having some good banter with my mum that evening and we joked as you do and she was still in a mobile state although her eating had reduced quite a lot. This was my last memory of some form of normality with my mum as after this she started deteriorating fast and the following two weeks were the hardest and longest weeks I have ever had, watching someone who was a figure of who I am fade away was deeply upsetting. It was more or less 8 weeks to the day I was advised that she sadly passed away which for me and my sister was scary. She passed in the company of her sister, my sister and her beloved cat Rosie as I was too late getting to her bedside.

To me she was the strongest person I have ever known. For her to go through that and hold it together  knowing what was coming was something I think I could never do.

Before my mum passed I had devised a plan with my work colleague and friend Simon, to do a charity event for Leukaemia and also for a charity that was special to Simon, however we wanted a challenge that would mean us both being at our physical and mental limits, something that could in essence be failed, something that no matter how much it hurt, we would push through as no hurt would replace what my mum went through.

So the event. We are going to be climbing three of the highest peaks in the UK but we are not doing them the easy ways, we shall be doing each via the various ridge routes and in doing so each one will be done where we climb up a different way to where we come down. However the fact that we shall be cycling between them all is another twist. Starting at Ben Nevis on July 30th we will then cycle from Nevis down to Glenridding in the Lakes, climb Helvellyn via Striding Edge and then cycle from there to Snowdon where the hardest trek awaits, Snowdon via the horse shoe which encompasses the knife edge ridge which is Crib Goch. A total of 650km on the bike, 50km trek and a 3,500 metre climb.
