Story
In 2008 my life, and that of my family was dramatically changed- I nearly lost my life, and I did lose the ability to walk, my memory, my legal career, and I almost lost myself.
It has taken years of physiotherapy, love, and struggle, but I’ve finally got myself back. The charity Back Up has helped me, like many others, forcing me to stretch myself physically in ways that I thought I never would be able to do again.
This charity is seriously amazing!
Every day in the UK, three people learn that they will never walk again. Expectations are low. Prejudice is rife. People think that their lives are over. They’re not. Yet support for people with spinal injuries is inadequate and Back Up fills the gap left where the NHS and social care stops to inspire independence in anyone affected by spinal cord injury.
Back Up gets NO government funding.
Back Up relies on volunteers to help transform lives. The support people need just isn't there- Advice on the right wheelchair, getting back to work; help for children who need to return to school, how to regain the confidence lost after injury, and vital peer support.
Back Up fills these gaps. It needs this vital funding.
In June, I 'll be kayaking with other volunteers (and camping at night) the Great Glen (between Fort William and Inverness). It is 67 miles and will be tough going for anyone!
Please sponsor me to help this incredible charity!
