Story
I must be nuts...
So, a little birdie may have told you that I have got myself a spot in the London Marathon in April 2017. You heard darn right my friend. You are not dreaming
this guys I AM ACTUALLY DOING THIS! I can't believe it myself, but in all seriousness this is a life ambition of mine achieved, and I am humbled, excited
and nervous in representing the charity RP Fighting Blindness.
Firstly, I just want to thank you for
taking a remote interest in my page. It is hard to stand out of the crowd when
there are so many amazing causes alongside little ol' me.
Right, let's crack on
with the story. Basically I suffer from a degenerative condition known as retinitis
pigmentosa (RP). A group of rare, genetic disorders that
involve a breakdown and loss of cells in the retina—which is the light sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. Common symptoms include difficulty seeing at night, also known as night
blindness. Added to that put in dollop of peripheral vision to the mix and you have got yourself a cocktail that will bound to give you a hangover for more than a
day.
I am not going to lie – I hate it. I
absolutely despise everything about it. I know that is a very negative way of
looking at it, but how else am I going to accept it? The bottom line is – I can’t. I had and still have an amazing life that I made sure is an independent and fulfilling
one. The last six months has been one of the most challenging periods of my life, if not the hardest. It has stopped me completely in my tracks to kick on
and live as independently and achieve what I want to achieve. I can’t do that right this moment. I’m hoping it won’t last long hence why I am doing this marathon
now.
As mentioned previously
this marathon is a life ambition of mine, but most importantly this is for me.
Most would argue I overcome this obstacle already, but I want to do this so I feel I ‘still got it’, and more personally give it the big fat middle finger that it deserves not just for me but for my uncles who suffer from this too.
I need to raise 2.5k by
December 2017 to raise funds in the hope we can find a cure one day. Any form of donation is much appreciated, and I would appreciate if you could spread the
word. Hey, I would even make a guest appearance for free at weddings, turning the Christmas lights on or whatever. I just appreciate every single support
been given.
The Huffington Post has done a feature about my story, which I am incredibly proud f. Please take the time to read and then share and retweet with the hashtag #blindmanrunning so we can get it out as far as possible. http://huff.to/2n5q78v
Much love x
