Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. By donating to my page you are not paying for just one placement, you are supporting all of the vital work done by ICS and VSO, enabling them to continue to change the world through the power of volunteering.

So, the first question you might be asking is "What important work does VSO do?"- If you're not I'm going to tell you anyway...

VSO works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. The volunteers' skills, knowledge and sheer enthusiasm make lasting and far reaching change in the world's poorest communities.I’m fundraising in support of all VSO funded projects, which benefit around 2 million people every year.

Subsequently, I’m really excited to be able to to volunteer overseas in Nepal with VSO on an International Citizen Service placement for 3 months. The ICS scheme works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also inspires young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term, sustainable community development.

The first part of my placement is a challenge to raise £800 towards the work of VSO and their ICS partners. The money raised will go towards enabling the overall costs of ICS, ensuring they can to continue sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference in disadvantaged communities.

By now it's likely that you'll be wondering what I'll actually be doing, you might also be wondering what my time in Nepal will be like and how this contrasts to my current lifestyle in the U.K. (If you were wondering about neither of these things I apologise, but suggest you continue reading to find out anyway.)

So...*Deep Breath*

I'll be located in the Lamjung district which has a population of 167,724 people, the main industry in the community I'll be living in is agriculture and farming, also the community consists mainly of Hindu's and Buddhists with a small minority of Muslims.

Amongst other things, I’ll be promoting girls' rights to education, work with the local youth in youth clubs and focus on trying empower and mentor them so that they can achieve their potential.

Also I'll be working to promote the welfare of plants, animals and the planet by providing effective interaction between nature and human beings. This will help to achieve a more sustainable planet n developing regions!

My diet will mainly be Lentils, Steamed Rice, Pickle and some currently unknown vegetables. This will be my diet for 3 months and is called 'Daal- Bhaat'- Which is probably Nepali for bland.

Finally, I'll be required to hike up the rough mountainous terrain which can take up to one hour to reach my project, and will be staying in Nepal partially through the monsoon season.

I will try to keep this page updated so that you can keep track of how I get on and so that you can better understand the difference this scheme makes for people in need. Any contribution

from you will make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries!

Thanks for your support, and together we can all make a difference!

Alex
