Story

Hi,

Thanks for looking into sponsoring me. As you know I have pledged to raise £2000 for Putney Samaritans by running the London marathon. I just thought that I would give you some details on this great cause.

Putney Samaritans is a financially independent charity; Samaritan Branches receive no funding from the national organisation of Samaritans.

•       The branch covers the following SW postal codes: 2, 4, 6, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 – a London population of over 650,000.  Callers can talk to a Sam 24/7 including Christmas, Easter, New Year’s Eve, whenever.  Our main expenses are offices, phones, publicity and training.

•       Over 120 unpaid volunteers answer about 40,000 phone calls a year (about a fifth of those we talk to are suicidal), volunteers do about 4 hours per week listening and responding to emails.  About a third of them do additionally about 4 hours or more a week in publicity, recruitment, training, admin, outreach to schools, prison visiting etc

•       Suicide in UK: in 2006, there were 5,554 suicides in adults aged 15 and over in the

UK.  The number of people killed in road accidents that year was 3,172.
