Story
Hi, I’m Alan
Having trekked up Kilimanjaro: 5,895m (19,341ft) in August last year; I am climbing COTOPAXI (5,897 / 19,347ft) in June and July this year as part of a team of both heart and lung transplants from Harefield Hospital.
This will be the second of a series of high altitude ascents over the next few years to publicise transplantation and organ donation https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk and raise funds for the Hospital’s transplant unit towards replacement kits used in the Organ Care System (OCS) heart and lung units used in transplantation by the team at Harefield.
This portable by-pass system, unlike conventional transportation methods, which rely on ice preservation, uses special fluids which means organs are suitable for transplantation for up to 12 hours, rather than the usual 3 hours. Apart from extending the range for organ donation this new technology is increasing survival rates and also reducing post-transplant complications.
The cost of the trip is funded privately, so all money raised will go to towards purchasing OCS replacement kits; and remember if a UK taxpayer an extra 25% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks, in anticipation of your support,
Alan
