Story

Take a few minutes out of your day today and think about this question. If an adult is unable to talk or write - how would you find out what they want to say?

84.5% of people have never heard the term “Aphasia”, which is a condition usually caused by a stroke or traumatic injury to a persons brain. A research study also demonstrated that Aphasia Has Greater Negative Impact on a Person’s Quality of Life than Cancer or Alzheimer’s Disease.

We spend so much of our day talking and I want to have a tiny insight into some of the frustrations that people can face if they have an inability to talk or write. On 23rd December I am going to complete a 12 hour sponsored silence. I will not talk or write (including no texting and no social media!) between the hours of 6am and 6pm, I am planning to go to the gym and get my Christmas food shop with my mam in complete silence!

I want to raise money for The North East Trust for Aphasia and hopefully in turn get people to come to learn what Aphasia is and how it affects the quality of life for at least 250,000 people in Great Britain.

In addition I want to raise this money in memory of my Grandma Ann who experienced Aphasia in addition to other health problems. My Grandma was unable to talk but we always made sure we found ways to ensure she was heard.
