Story
So, six months ago someone challenged me to climb the 214 Wainwright peaks in a year. After a hard six months, including some tough winter walks, I reached halfway - 107 peaks. Then it dawned on me that, although I'm getting plenty from this - exercise, the views, the sense of achievement - others aren't. In particular those less-advantaged than me, especially those with disabilities, struggle to enjoy the Great Outdoors.
Whilst at uni, the topic of Globalisation was never far from discussion. Looking at the global effect of our actions is one way to view the world but the old adage that charity starts at home still rings true.
Instead of supporting national charities, I believe in something we could term Glocalisation: i.e think global, act local. There are many global issues, of which participation for the disabled is just one, but instead of giving to huge national charities smaller local charities need help more.
This is just one of those charities who do sterling work helping disabled people of all ages and abilities enjoy outdoor pursuits.
I have over 3000 friends, accquaintances, workmates, ex-workmates, uni friends, college friends, Mafia Wars friends and others on Facebook. If each of you donated just 1p, I would raise £30. If each of you donated just £1.00 I would raise £3000!!!
Many of you are now in graduate employment, some of you are mature with no children to support. Is it too much to ask for just £1.00??
A few of you know that in 1998 I had a serious motorcycle accident where I nearly lost my right leg. The accident has left me with 25% of the right thigh muscle cut away and a damaged back and neck. I'm still able to enjoy a full and active life though. This charity aims to allow disabled people the same opportunities. Your support would be appreciated...
I know I'm already halfway through the Wainwrights but then again, I'm halfway through the year and the second half will be tougher as I work long anti-social hours, the cost of petrol to get to the peaks is huge and my poor car is paying the price for my challenge. I love doing this and the expense I'll bear in return for a small donation to the the Calvert Trust from you (http://www.calvert-trust.org.uk/)
