Story
We are planning a 3600 mile round drive from Staffordshire in England to Murcia, in Southern Spain, in a 1961 Morris Minor 1000. All to raise money for the Limbless Veterans Charity, BLESMA.
BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association) was born in 1932 after forty thousand service men came home having lost limbs or eyes during the First World War.
They were disillusioned by the promise of a ‘land fit for hero’s’, and with amputation techniques in their infancy and artificial limbs primitive 90% of our nation’s war limbless could not find work. Since its creation BLESMA has lobbied governments, set up support systems and been a part of improving standards of living for our limbless veterans. They are the only national Armed Forces Charity that supports limbless veterans
for the duration of their lives. Modern medicine can transform the physical injury, but it is a complicated process to treat the emotional trauma and related lifelong health problems that so many of our limbless veterans face.
We estimate we’ll be driving over 3200 miles, over 15 days, and through 3 or more countries. We will be stopping at various war sites and memorials on the way, including the Normandy beaches and memorials for the Battle of the Somme.
We’d like to raise at least £500 for this worthy cause. Your money could go towards:
- Rehabilitation activities for our veterans
- One-to-one home support to inured and blinded veterans
- Providing support to limbless veterans and widows
- 24/7 professional care to veterans at BLESMA’s Blackpool home
