Story

In summer 2023, to raise money for an incredible charity, I’ll be completing two pretty major challenges with my good friends Gwen Smith, Tom Moore and Richie Patel.

In July we’ll be taking part in a dawn-to-dusk event where we will cycle 22 miles off-road with 2500ft of ascent around Coniston's challenging terrain, navigate a 2-mile course on Coniston Water in a canoe, and finally climb the Old Man Of Coniston, one of the Lake District's most iconic peaks with an altitude of 803m, on a 7 mile round trip.

In June, to warm up for this, we’ll be doing the Three Peaks, completing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours.

In 2018 my niece, Nancy, fell unexpectedly very ill. After a whirlwind which saw Nancy move through Paediatric ICU at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre to the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at The Glenfield Hospital, Leicester we learned that Nancy has an electrical problem with her heart which is currently managed with medication but which will require more treatment in the future.

That same year, my good friend Richie’s daughter Kaiya was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukaemia after he and his wife, Annu, discovered some unexplained bruising on her legs. Over 9 months Kaiya battled hard against her cancer and unbelievably she won that fight. Tragically, post-transplant, she contracted an adenovirus from which she didn’t recover. She was 6 years old. During that second fight Kaiya brought about a change in a drug protocol that means that other kids with adenovirus will not suffer the same fate as her. Kaiya’s spirit lives on - she has inspired in excess of 40,000 to sign up to be bone marrow donors, consequentially saving the lives of many and she united communities here in the U.K and throughout the world to work together to reach a common goal. In her name, thousands have been raised for charities she supported. She won the Anthony Nolan John Petchey Young Hero award for bravery.
