Story
Hi! I am doing this sponsored Skydive on Saturday 4th September 2010 to try and raise money for the Children’s Renal Ward at St James Hospital in Leeds.
My friend Selina has two sons Jack 6yrs old & Jorge 2 yrs old who both go to this hospital on a regular basis as they have Cystinuria - a condition where they get Kidney Stones. If the boys keep getting the Kidney stone this could damage there Kidneys which could then result in them needing dialysis.
Cystinuria is an inherited defect metabolic disorder characterized by the abnormal movement in the intestines and kidneys that prevents the body’s retention of certain amino acids from leaving the body. As a result excessive amounts of undissolved cystine in the urine cause the formation of solid crystals which form hard rock cystine stones in the kidney, bladder, and/or ureter.
Unfortunately this condition is something that the boys will suffer with for the rest of there lives. They are on permanent medication 3 times a day and have to attend regular check-ups/scans every 3 months. The medication they take is clearly beneficial to them, however it has bad side effects which could result in other types of stones forming in the future. Jack was found to have Kidney stones when he was just 18 months old and as a result had to undergo 4 operations in the space of only 2 months. His younger brother Jorge was found to be suffering with the same condition when he was just 2 wks old. Unfortunately at their last scans the boys were shown to both now have Kidney Stones. I would like to raise money for children like Selina's two lovely boys in order to make a difference to their lives and the lives of their families. For any grown person hospital visits and over night stays are a daunting experience, so as you can imagine for a child the experience is ten times worse. Therefore I would like to raise the money to help ensure that children's visits to the hospital and their overnight stays are as much of a pleasant experience as possible under the circumstances, and for essential support to be provided to their families.
Selina and I will be doing the Skydive together - so if anyone else would also like to join us or try and help us raise money please let us know.
Many Thanks Abigail x
