We support young people living with HIV to live well and achieve their potential

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I decided 2016 would be a good year to do more than just work at CHIVA! It is a fabulous organisation, full of inspiring young people and dedicated volunteers. Each year we run a support camp for children and young people aged from 11-16 years living with HIV in the UK. It costs about £800 per child to provide this unique experience. Participants learn about living well with HIV, and form their own peer support networks with others who understand their perspective and have similar life experiences. HIV is now a manageable health condition; children and young people born with HIV should live a long and healthy life as long as they have access to medicine, there are very few limits to what they can achieve. However, the stigma that still surrounds HIV, and the general misunderstanding and misinformation which exists, means that many young people grow up having to manage this negativity, and this can impact heavily on their self-esteem and ability to cope with their HIV, as well as life in general.
