Story
There are 57 of us all taking part in the Great Midland Fun Run 2017 to raise money and awareness for the Birmingham & Solihull Branch of the MND Associaton.
Any donation will be massively appreciated as we have first-hand experience of the work of our local branch. All money raised will enable them to continue to support families and fund research into developing a cure.
Motor neurone disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), occurs when specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord called motor neurones stop working properly. This is known as neurodegeneration.
Motor neurones control important muscle activity, such as:
- gripping
- walking
- speaking
- swallowing
- breathing
As the condition progresses, people with motor neurone disease will find some or all of these activities increasingly difficult. Eventually, they may become impossible.
Motor neurone disease is a severely life-shortening condition for most people. Life expectancy for about half of those with the condition is 3 years from the start of symptoms.
