Story
On May 27th 2017, I will be doing my best huff and a puff/wheeze/limp in an attempt to complete a 10k. I will have a fantastic red head band on as I pound the streets in training but it's all to raise funds for the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh.
Why am I doing this? I regularly ask myself the same question as I don my too-tight lycra that once used to fit...here's why:
In 2006, my youngest son, Connor, came into the world. Sadly, he became ill when he was just 17 days old and spent a week in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh or as we locals call it 'The Sick Kids'. He was attached to monitors to indicate his oxygen levels and tubes that fed him until he was strong enough to do it himself. It's not how you visualise the start of your child's life but it happens and you get through it.
Fast forward 10 years and he is a whirlwind of shenanigans and makes me laugh every day. It's all down to the dedicated staff at the Sick Kids, because thanks to them, I got my boy home.
So, for one day out of your week, may I ask you to reconsider that sly latte on the way to work or that chocolate muffin from the bakery on the way home (or is it just me that does that?). A couple of pound goes a long way. Anything you have to spare would be gratefully appreciated.
Child first. Patient second.
