Story

'Where are we? No, sorry. I got to get used to this whole new language. When are we?'

When Doctor Who returned to TV in 2005, production moved to South Wales, and it's this area which has provided the backdrop to almost every single episode broadcast over the last 16 years. Parts of Cardiff and the surrounding area have doubled for London, New York, space stations and long forgotten parts of history.

'So where are we going?' / 'Further than we've ever gone before...'

I moved to Cardiff in the spring of 2011, and the excitement of there being a location recognisable from Doctor Who around every corner never gets old. For my first seven years here I lived right in the middle of Cardiff Bay, and gave Torchwood a cheery wave on my way to the shop every morning for some milk.

But there's so many other locations that I've never visited, even though they're right on my doorstep. My plan is to visit a distinct location from every episode of the Russell T Davies era of the series. That covers every episode of Doctor Who from Rose (March 2005) to The End of Time Part Two (January 2010) - totalling sixty episodes, and sixty locations.

'It's not the time that matters...'

The real challenge is that I'm not just doing this at a leisurely pace. I plan to visit all these locations in a single day. Sixty of them. On a Thursday! What makes it even harder is that, in spite of my best attempts, I don't have a TARDIS to work with. I'll be taking the slow path.

I'll be undertaking my challenge from 7am on Thursday 12th August 2021, and posting images from each location as I reach them on my Instagram story - you can follow along via @willbrooks1989 .

The week after I'll be posting a longer blog post about the day, with a bit more information and history from each location. The locations used by Doctor Who cover long-closed industry, ancient hillsides and modern buildings, so tell a unique story of South Wales.

'Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love.'

I'm asking people to sponsor me in this challenge in memory of the much-missed Elisabeth Sladen, who passed away ten years ago this April. Elisabeth joined Doctor Who as Sarah Jane Smith in 1973, and returned to the programme in 2006 40 years after departing from the TARDIS.

I love Sarah Jane - and I love Elisabeth Sladen. She's brought me a lot of joy over the years, and I've been enjoying her all over again through a Doctor Who marathon which has just reached her first run in the show.

All the money raised from undertaking this challenge is being donated to the Meadow House Hospice, who cared for Elisabeth in the final weeks of her life, and continue to provide support and care to people who need it.

'I'm the Doctor, by the way. What's your name?'

Hi, I'm Will. I'm a freelance Graphic Designer based in South Wales, and over the last decade I've been providing artwork for a whole host of Doctor Who merchandise, from Titan Comics to Big Finish and the Doctor Who Experience. I'm currently providing the art and layout for the Doctor Who Roleplaying Game.

I'm working my way through a Doctor Who marathon at the moment and blogging my thoughts every day over at Medium.com/DoctorWhoMarathon .
