Story
Hi, everyone.
We are currently deployed with the Army in South Sudan and am taking part in a “Flipathon”- a half marathon of tyre flipping, along with 5 other lads out here. That’s around 2200 flips (!) each and it will take between 8 and 10 hours in 30+ degree heat. 🤢
We’re doing this to support a charity called Green Kordofan, which provides a sporting “way out” for the vulnerable children here, all refugees as a result of the ongoing war in Sudan. They provide training sessions 3 times a week for the kids in both football and volleyball, but also talk through social issues like gender equality, HIV/AIDS and they even provide them with a much needed meal.
To give you an idea of how dire the scenario here is at the moment, I’ve researched some numbers for you:
Demographically, South Sudan is among the youngest nations in the world, with half the population aged 18 or under
It ranks third lowest on the UN World Happiness Report
Second lowest in the Global Peace Index
It has the third highest score on the Fund for Peace’s Fragile States Index
More than 90% of the people here live on less than $1/day
The maternal mortality rate is the highest in the world, and the under-five infant mortality rate is 135/1000.
These kids need absolutely any help they can get, and anyone with their ear to the ground on the news knows just how bad a state the country is in. Whatever you can donate will go to a seriously good cause; so thank you in advance 🇬🇧 🇸🇸
