The 4th Littlehampton Scout Group's hall (The Martin Sanders Hall) opened in 1988 .
When the hall was built it contained a hot air heating system.
Whils this heating system has lasted well for it's years, it's now starting to show it's age and is in need of replacement.
Earlier this year the Group's fund-raising committee decided to make this their main target project. Since then they have been beavering away (sorry about the pun) to raise the required capital to install a new system and also extras, for example heating in the entrance halls and meeting rooms.
The current heating system is oil-fired and 30years old. It is not as efficiant as it could be and limited in what if provides.
We are currently looking as alternative fuels, i.e. Gas and Biomass.
Although there is no gas into the premises, there is gas laid on to St. John's, this means that the cost of installing gas is reduced as far as connection is concerned.
Biomass is a "green" alternative, is cost effective and allows us to use a range of fuel types.
There is a "mixed fuel burner" or a pellet burner. The mixed fuel burner allows wood chips, shavings, pellets, olive stones to name but a few.
Quotes for a replacement gas system so far have been between £5,000 and £10,000 plus the cost of gas connection (estimated to be approx. £1,500. Costs for a boimass alternative are still being investigated.
We would lideally like to install a new system before the winter sets in, but this relies on both finances raised and if we can sucessfully obtain a grant to help with the capital outlay
