We register stem cell, blood & organ donors to to save lives by giving the gift of life

Story

Whilststudying for my Sports Therapy degree back in 2006, I met some amazing people.Among these people was Daniel De-Gale. This group of friends; formally known asthe London Met crew or more recently The Buff Squad, went on to become some ofmy closest... My ride or die's. We have been through a lot together over theyears!

Dan andhis family started the ACLT charity after Dan battled with Leukaemia as a childand required a stem cell transplant to save his life. Dan thankfully found hismatch in a wonderful lady from America called Doreene. The stem cell transplantgave Dan many more years of life, and boy did he fit a lot of life into thoseyears! Many others unfortunately did not find their match. This is because whenthe ACLT was founded the chance of Dan finding a match was slim to none due tohis ethnicity. Anyone from black, mixed race, Asian or ethnic minoritycommunities had a 1 in 250,000 chance of finding a match, simply due to thelack of people on the register. Through the work of the ACLT who tirelesslycampaign and raise awareness, over 70,000 people have joined the stem celldonor register and over 70 lives of ALL ethnicitieshave been saved; justas Dan's once was. Tens of thousands of blood donors and thousands oforgan donors have also been registered; saving many more lives.

Dan unfortunately passed away at the age of 21, our final year atUniversity. But, he left behind a huge legacy and to this day is one of themost inspiring people I have ever met. I was so lucky to have known Dan and tohave called him my friend and for that reason I will be running my very firstmarathon in his memory. I'm hoping to do some good in the world just like Dandid.
