What
am I doing?
For
reasons that are no longer clear (although it seemed like such a good
idea back in March!) I've agreed to tackle the Yorkshire 3
Peaks on Saturday 8th May. This
is a 24.5 mile circular walk including over 5,000 feet (1,600m) of
climbing, which encompasses the summits of Pen-y-ghent
(694 metres - 2,276
feet), Whernside (736 metres - 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723
metres
2,372 feet).
Rather worringly it's described as a "demanding" walk, although I'm assured it's also rewarding.
Why
am I doing it?
To raise money for Garden Organic, the national charity for organic growing.
Organic
growing helps to protect the
environment, reduce food miles and encourages people to engage with
issues of health, diet
and sustainable lifestyles. And this is what Garden Organic is all
about; working nationwide with individuals, schools and communities to
enable, promote and support organic food growing; developing organic
horticultural training, working in collaborative
partnerships to promote organic growing and lobbying to get organic
food growing onto the national and international political agenda.
Garden Organic also engages in groundbreaking (excuse the pun) organic research, manages organic demonstration gardens and is home to the Heritage Seed Library, a unique living collection of heirloom vegetable varieties, many of which are threatened with extinction. Protecting these varieties helps safeguard not just a part of our social history but also our plant genetic diversity for generations to come.
Coincidentally, Garden Organic is the charity that I work for...
