Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
The canoe club really wanted to run an event in memory of two of our paddlers and raise some money for a good cause. It seemed that a 24 hour paddling relay would challenge members and allow us to show some respect for Chris and Gary's families while raising money for Cornwall Hospice Care where dear Chris spent his last days.
Our canoe club serves the local area and our members come in all shapes and sizes with paddling being the one thing that bonds them all. It's a special bond as all of us take care and consideration for each other helping with lifting and carrying, teaching and supporting each other on the water, sharing some hot drink on a cold picnic stop or possibly paddling into dangerous water to help another that may be in trouble.
Christopher Prescott was a member of the club for many years and was always one of the ones who turned up rain snow hale or blow. He had a really friendly manner and gave much more than he took. Chris lost his life to cancer late in 2012 and many of the club members feel sad not to have been able to make him aware of the affection we felt for him and the high esteem in which he was held. Friday nights paddling seems different without Chris, like a jigsaw puzzle of people with a piece missing. We all have pieces missing in our lives so I hope you'll understand that doing this event is not just about raising money but to give us all the chance to show we cared.
Gary Scrase was a gentle and caring family man, I say that as he paddled mostly to get his children out doing something they enjoyed. Youngsters sometimes need a little push to get them motivated and its fathers like Gary that play such a vital part by giving time and encouragement. He was part of a coastguard cliff rescue team and spent many hours training and working to help others. He very sadly died in May 2012 following a car crash leaving his family, friends and colleagues shocked and devastated.
Both Gary and Chris cared about others more than themselves and we hope very much that we can all find inspiration from them and follow their example and be kind.
