Story

What is '20 x 50'?

It means 20 by 50.

20,000 feet up mountains by the time I reach 50 years old. Which is soon.

Why? Well despite being one of the most loved and iconic animals, lions are in serious trouble and only 20,000 of them remain in the wild. The threats they face from hunting, poaching and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten them every single day and they need our help.

The Born Free Foundation is at the forefront of the work being done to protect these precious animals, so every penny raised in this campaign will go to Born Free, supporting them in their continuing efforts to save lions.

This is an inclusive campaign, open to anyone, so reach out to your friends and family, raise a minimum of £200 and join me in climbing a mountain for lions.

So what am I doing? Well as soon as lockdown restrictions are eased and circumstances allow it, I'll be walking up the three highest mountains in the UK - Ben Nevis (Scotland), Snowdon (Wales) and Scafell Pike (England) - as well as Sljeme in Croatia, a peak to be determined within the Santa Monica mountain range in California and Mount Kenya in...well, Kenya surprisingly. My goal is to ascend a total of at least 20,000 feet to represent those last remaining twenty thousand lions, and to achieve that by my 50th birthday which is on August 29th this year (2021).

Due to the current lockdown in the UK, the schedule can't be set just yet, but as soon as we have the freedom to travel, I'll announce the first of the climbs and they'll be spread over a couple of months, maximising your chance of being able to join me for one of them. None of these ascents will require anything other than determination. They are not technical climbs, just a long, uphill hike.

The great news is that we are already way ahead of the game in terms of the financial target. Thanks to £3550 that was very kindly donated to my previous campaign for lions (which lockdown prevented from actually  happening) and another extremely generous donation of £2000 to this new campaign, we are already at £5550 or around $7500, leaving just $12,500 more to raise by the end of August. We can do this!

Please donate if you can, or consider raising sponsorship of at least £200 yourself and joining me on one of the mountain ascents. Together we can make a real difference and help the born Free Foundation protect lions. Thank you!
