Story
Please support my volunteer efforts to build home dialysis rooms for four children - Wendy, Marta, Fernando and Evelyn.
I will be traveling with Bridge of Life (BOL) to rural Guatemala from March 19 - 26, 2023. We will partner with FUNDANIER, BOL's pediatric dialysis partner, and Habitat for Humanity Guatemala (HFHG) to create safe treatment spaces for the administration of home-based dialysis.
These children, with end-stage kidney disease in rural Guatemala, must receive hemodialysis at the hospital. Hemodialysis is the least favorable treatment and requires that the children travel to a clinic, often 3 times a week, putting an economic burden on the families. These families have difficulty accessing healthcare services due to poverty, lack of transportation, limited resources, lack of safe infrastructure, and language barriers. They do not presently live in conditions that make them eligible to receive the optimal treatment, home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD). Home PD has fewer side effects than hemodialysis and the treatment can be done at night, allowing the children to do more activities during the day, including going to school.
Please help me support Wendy, Marta, Fernando and Evelyn, who have chronic renal disease, dialyze at home. Thank you! I appreciate your support!
