15 Peaks Challenge · 23 March 2006
On Saturday the 15th July 2006 - a team of four (Christina Mckay, Andy Gwynn, Sara McIlroy and Mike Gwynn) propose to do the ‘15 Peaks Challenge’ for charity. This challenge is to climb the 15 highest peaks in Snowdonia (all above 3000ft - 914m) in one day-light day (sunrise to sunset).
--Please note, the date at the top of this page is wrong but can't be changed!--
.
The challenge begins on the summit of Snowdon at approximately 4:36am (having walked to the summit during the night) and aims to finish at the summit of Foel Fras well before 9:03pm.
.
The challenge itself is a full marathon (26miles - 42km) but a considerable climb of some 14,000ft adds a touch of adventure.
.
The 15 summits in order of ascent are: Snowdon (1085m), Crib y Ddysgl (1065m), Grib Goch (923m), Elidir Fawr (923m), Y Garn (947m), Glyder Fawr (999m), Glyder Fach (994m), Tryfan (915m), Pen yr Ole Wen (978m), Carnedd Dafydd (1044m), Carnedd Llewellyn (1064m), Yr Elen (962m), Foel Grach (976m), Garnedd Uchaf (926m) and Foel Fras (942m)
.
Including the ascent of Snowdon and the final descent from Foel Fras, thankfully not officially part of the challenge but none the less completed on the same day, the walk/run/jog is a 32.5 mile (52km) slog taking in 15,500ft of ascent.
.
We have all begun our training for the event: Andy and Mackers have just done the JP Morgan 6k run, Mike has done the Manchester 10k as a warm up, Chris will eat more...
.
We will be undertaking the challenge for Cancer Research. This is not the usual sponsored event where only some of the money goes toward our chosen charity and the rest is ensumed by administration for the event*, all of your money will go directly to the charity and if you give via our online justgiving site, the tax man will add 28% to your donation.
.
1 in 3 of us will contract cancer in our life times and nearly everyone will know of someone who has contracted the disease. It’s a very worthwhile challenge for a very worthy cause close to our hearts and of so many others, so please donate now!!
