Why we decided to raise some money for temple street:

Hi All,

I am looking for your help for a great cause!!

I am hoping to get the support of as many people as possible, to run/jog/walk as many miles as they can on May 1st between 8.30am and 1.30pm.

Let me tell you why and then tell you what we hope to achieve.

I was always aware of the fantastic work Temple Street Children’s hospital provided, but mostly from memory of been there as a kid myself. Indeed there are few families that have not had to engage with them in some capacity and utilise their fantastic services.

Last year, as a parent, witnessed their medical professionalism and care first hand when my own daughter required their help.

Last July my daughter was feeling unwell and we brought her to Temple Street. Within a few hours of stepping inside the doors it was established, that at age 10, she was Type 1 diabetic and life would be a little different from then on for us all.

We spent 4 days in Temple street and I watched the amazing care and support they provided during our stay. As anyone who knows about type 1, unfortunately it doesn’t end when you leave hospital after your 4 day visit, that was simply the start of a new journey for all of us. Temple Street continued to support us initially on a daily basisWe now we have weekly calls to monitor, review and adjust the insulin intake that she is required to give herself four times throughout each day.

So as I lay on the bumpy mattress on the hospital floor, I
said to myself the next marathon I do, I will try and raise some money for this amazing place that helped us and will help many other families in the future. Even if I get enough for a new comfortable mattress for the next parent that
has to lay here it will be worth it 😊

Now the plan!! With no marathons last year and looking
unlikely this year, I decided I would do something on our May Bank Holiday. Then I got thinking, why suffer on my own? 😓
I will get others involved; family, friends, Dunboyne AC team mates and our wonderful local community. Then maybe we can all raise a few euro along the way.

From speaking to many of my clubmates/friends, it is evident many of us need a purpose, a goal, so this may provide a platform to get many of us motivated.

So on May 1st we are hoping to have family, friends and friends of friends of all ages, cover a minimum of “1000 miles for Temple Street” walking or running over a 5 hour period.

This will obviously all need to be done as per the COVID guidelines in place at that time. This virtual event is in a few weeks’ time, so anybody that wants to set themselves a goal for any distance, this is the perfect opportunity. This also coincides with the weekend of the Limerick Virtual 5,10, half and full marathon races if anyone wants to piggy back on this. This could be an opportunity to do that 5K you always wanted to do, or that half marathon you dreamed of. Every mile counts!!!

It can be an individual run or run as a family to get everyone involved, just add up all the miles. Every mile counts!!!

So where do I sign up I hear you shout. Well we have a few
ways to get involved? Follow the instruction above.

The main goal of “1000 miles for temple street” is to raise
as much money as possible. So please, if you can take part get your friends, family and work colleagues to sponsor the event. We have one central fundraising page that everyone can use . We will regularly update the Facebook page and send emails with the full list of people taking part.

It would be fantastic to get as many involved as possible to
support this amazing cause.

Many Thanks,

Kevin Clancy
